In applying this Directive, Member States should seek to ensure full respect for the principles of the best interests of the child and of family unity, in accordance with , the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and, where applicable, the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.
