Where it is necessary and duly justified for the examination of an application for international protection, the competent authorities should be able to require that the applicant be searched or that his or her items be searched. Those items may include electronic devices such as laptops, tablet computers or mobile phones. Any such search should be carried out in a way that respects fundamental rights and the principle of proportionality.
